These wood arrows are made with the competition Longbow/Self bow archer in mind, but are excellent for all traditional archery applications. These arrows have all the charm of our Hunter Grade arrows with tighter tolerances in both weight and spine. Handmade, hand painted, hand straightened and hand spine tested in the United States of America, from 32 inch premium cedar shafts.
More refined specifications for each set are listed on each set’s build card, pictured in the photos. Common specifications are listed below.
Wood Type: Port Orford Cedar
Diameters: 5/16” for 30-35 spine through 40-45 spine. 11/32” for 45-50 spine and above. All are parallel shafts.
Max Length: 31.25 inches from the valley of the nock to the back of the point.
Fletching: Four or five inch shield cut turkey feathers. RW, Right helical twist. Look at the build card for each set pictured in the photos to see the feather length.
Nock: Bohning Classic Plastic Nock
Point: Points sold separately. Installation included if desired.
Weight Tolerance: My maximum arrow weight tolerance for competition grade arrows is 10 grains per matched set. (The lightest arrow and the heaviest arrow will have no more than a 10 grain weight difference). Most arrow sets have a weight spread that is lower than this. Look for the arrow build card in the photos to see the actual weight spread for each set, keeping in mind that the overall arrow weight will change from what is depicted on the card when the arrows are cut to length. Finished arrow weight will also be affected by the point weight that you choose. The weight provided on the build card is total uncut arrow weight plus 125 grains as a default point weight.
Spine Tolerance: The industry standard for a wood arrow spine group includes six different spines. For example 40-45(40,41,42,43,44 and 45). For our Competition Grade arrows we reduce this to three spines or less for better consistency. For example 30-32 spine. The listing will have a spine sub-category marking of Light, Medium Light, Medium Heavy or Heavy (30-35L,30-35ML,30-35MH,30-35H). Light sets will be in the bottom three pounds (30-32). Medium Light sets will be in the lower middle three pounds (31-33). Medium Heavy sets will be in the higher middle three pounds (32-34). Heavy sets will be in the top three pounds (33-35). To see the actual spine range for each set, look at the build card in the photos.
My build process includes hand straightening each shaft before and during the painting process, matching components by weight and aligning nocks with the wood grain in order to maximize consistency. I use two tones of wood stain instead of crown dip, allowing the natural wood grain to show through. Multiple coats of clear gloss finish makes each color pop.
